Intellectual institutions, of either little or great prestige, opened since the beginning of the 19th century -indeed, in some areas since the previous century- within the centers of the winder Balks area. The Greek educational institutions, such as the Royal Academies of Bucharest and Jassy or the Great Schools of Smyrni, Kydonies, Chios, Patmos and Zemon. They were centers important for the diffusion of the new, scientific ideas, where not only Greeks, but Serbians, Bulgarians, Albanians, Romanians and Turks as well, attended courses. These schools contributed also to the development of the Balkan intellect, to the national awareness, the intense editorial activities concerning the works of the various scientific fields and the translations/adaptations of the works of the contemporary European scientific thought in the Balkan languages (mainly by means of the Greek language).
